East Sacramento resident Barbara
Lym always dreamed of opening a women's clothing boutique. As she flew around the
country in recent years working with national clients in advertising sales, she kept
an idea file in her head of shops she loved. Lym was born and raised in San Francisco,
and while she loves living in Sacramento, she hoped one day to bring the same type
of boutique shopping experience available in major cities closer to her home. |

| A few months ago, a friend saw a for-sale
sign at a retail space at 53rd and H streets and suggested Lym take a look. After
some quick soul searching, Lym bought the building (she also used to sell residential
real estate in San Francisco) and put her shop plans into full gear. |
 |
| The new shop is called Serendipity and refects the good fortune Lym found in what she considers the perfect location
next door to Selland's Market Cafe, which opened earlier this year. (It is also just
down the street from her 47th Street home.) The shop's decor is classic Shabby Chic.
"I wanted to create a chic yet almost rugged style," Lym explains. "The
casualness of the store creates the environment of visiting the home of a stylish
friend rather than going to a commercial mall." |
 |
| She describes the shop as a boutique
for contemporary women's clothing in sizes 2-12. She features designer apparel with
an emphasis on "easy wear" styles that offer comfort and chic. Serendipity's
designer lineup includes Blue Dot, Fitiques, Margaret O’Leary, Susana Monoco, Three
Dots and more. |
| |
| "I look for natural fibers like
cotton and cashmere but also comfort fibers like Supplex and emphasize an urban style
with a touch of femininity," says Lym. Serendipity also carries gift items,
jewelry and accessories including some unique and vintage-look purses. |
| |
| A skin care line will be added next
month along with shoes by Taryn Rose, an orthopedic surgeon who designs an exclusive
shoe line with both comfort and style. "I hope to move the store into a general
store for women by early next year," adds Lym. |
